Its easy to hate everything Microsoft (I too hate crossing Bill's palm with Amex as much as the next person) and its also true that Open Office 2 is a supberb piece of software - particularly given as its free. In fact I have been using Open Office exclusively - until now.
There's one thing that gives Office 2007 the edge over Open Office and that's the new ribbon interface. It really is brilliant and it really does increase productivity. Afterall, if it wasn't for the ribbon it would be just another office suite and I would stick with Open Office.
It seems though, that Microsoft really have sat with end users and really have taken notice of how people use their software and I think that the new user interface is a huge step forward in software interaction.
As a home user as well I don't think the 85ish that Amazon is asking for 3 licenses is particularly expensive. About 27.50 each which if you think back to the cost of the full proper office suite a couple of years ago is pretty good value.
Just bear in mind that the standard Home & Student pack doesn't come with Outlook which I suppose most home users won't miss (although I can't live without it so bought it separately from MS for 40 odd) but it does come with OneNote which is proving useful.
All in all if you're not sure whether you're ready for the jump to Office 07 then download the 60 trial version from Micrsoft's website. Just be warned if you do you may find yourself reaching for your credit card - I did!! (and a word of warning, its much cheaper to by the software from Amazon than to acitivate your demo version via Microsoft).

I am currently using the trial version of this product and I have to say, I am completely impressed. This is the first time that this product has been marketed as a Home and Student, rather than a Student/Teacher, so it is more affordable for home users, who in the past could not qualify for the Student/Teacher package.
The interface is smooth, with many more functions within a single mouse click, and easy to access. Each time I am using the programmes, I keep finding new functions that are just fantastic - such as cover pages for word documents, with various templates to create a completely professional image. Not undoable before, but now so much quicker.
The lack of Outlook is disappointing, and pricey to add in, but maybe Microsoft will change their minds, then again maybe not.
I've never purchased additional software such as this before, instead making do with whatever is on my computer, but I will not be returning to the previous version.
Very user-friendly, an excellent product.

I use office 2007 on beta, and have been very impressed by how easy it is to navigate between menus, put your favourite buttons in bars on the screen, and the ribbons make it so easy to use.
If you like Office as a package, i would recommend getting it, but if you only use publisher- stick with 2003- as the new one doesn't use the ribbon and is almost identical. However, Excel is far easier to use and far better to look at, whilst word is very similar. Excel makes it easier with the merge cell button being on the main ribbon, and cell formatting being a drop down, not a pop up, which was frustrating in 2003.
Simply, if you use office regularly; and especially word and excel, buy this. It's nice to look at, easy to use, and a far better package that office 2003.

I required Word, Excel, Outlook and OneNote leaving me only two viable options - either Office 2007 Standard Edition plus OneNote 2007 (total cost > [...]) or Office Home & Student 2007 Edition plus Outlook 2007 (total cost < [...]). An obvious choice, and it's worth pointing out that OneNote is still a largely undiscovered yet indispensible piece of software, allowing even the most organised of people to effectively collate all of their notes into one place, whether these be task lists; screenshots (known as clippings in OneNote) of literally anything, with intelligent URL capture of 'clipped' web pages; printed documents from any other program (via the OneNote printer driver); etc. A key feature of OneNote is the exclusion of 'save' options, meaning that everything you do in OneNote is automatically saved as you do it, so no more lost work in the event of a crash. It is logical to include OneNote in a package which is also aimed at students, as I can see exactly how a student might use this application to organise their study notes, timetables, revision, etc. I would have used OneNote extensively had it been available when I was a student!
The 2007 versions of Word and Excel extend their superseded cousins with a polished feel, and rendering in tune with Internet Explorer 7 (this is visible across the entire 2007 range of Office applications). Excel 2007 finally supports a realistic number of rows (1048576) and offers considerable new and improved functionality. Creating tables in Word 2007 is now easier than ever, and Times New Roman has finally been replaced as the default font. There are all sorts of improvements that will make you smile, and that is true of this entire Office product, which offers great value for money when you consider that it can installed on up to three PCs in your household under just the one licence.
Highly recommended even without Outlook, which can of course be purchased separately.

I purchased this software to use with my new Dell laptop: Vista would not load, what for me was the perfectly adequate MS Office 97.
I agree with many of the negative comments made, the system is slow and cumbersome and even with a dual core processor, it takes ages to load. Upsides, not a lot. WHy then 5 stars? Well I have twice now written adverse reports on this software, giving it only one star - the result, Amazon have not published my comments. Just consider how many customers must have purchased this software and only 18 reviews to date. Says a lot.
I have used Amazon for years, but I do think that they are not publishing all of the reviews. Let's see if five stars can get on. I bet it does where 1 doesn't.
